Saya Lounge

A new themed bar located on Broughton Street in the original J.C. Penny Building. The bar was located in the basement space previously occupied by the city in the 1980’s as storage after the closing of J.C. Penny. While serving as Project Manager for the renovation and modernization of the shell structure in which it was housed, Bryce’s firm was approached by one of the shell building partners about opening a new destination night club in the basement space. the partner was a former associate at SOM and brought an interior design concept to the project that needed refinement to be code and zoning compliant.

As the Project Manager for this project, Bryce oversaw the Design Development, Construction Drawing, and Permitting phases of the project. the owner handled their own CA. The project required careful planning for life safety issues as it was a windowless space with flammable decorative finishes, services by a single main stairway. Bryce developed a hidden secondary stairway by extending an historic stairway down, pinning it’s structure off the elevator shaft. He also developed it’s entrance at street level to work with the shell building facade  and comply with historic district requirements while also creatng a gathering space at night.

The project opened in 2007 and remained open through 2012 when the owner moved away. It was considered a destination bar in the city during it’s tenure and was mentioned in various travel guides while open.
